CHAPTER THIRTEEN

THE RED PUMPER from Bayside careened to a stop on the opposite side of the wrecked vehicles. The man driving it wore full turnout gear, minus the helmet. He jumped out of the truck and ran like an Olympian. Evie walked swiftly, anxious to intercept Scott and relieve his mind. The sooner he realized his sister was not injured, the safer everyone would be.

“Where is she?” he growled. He took Evie by the shoulders. He was crazy-eyed. Almost terrifying in his intensity. His eyes dropped to Evie’s neck and white blouse. “There’s blood on you.”

“It’s not mine. It’s from Caroline—”

Scott’s grip on Evie’s shoulders tightened. “Caroline. Is she...?”

Evie had never seen another human being look so haunted. She hardly recognized Scott’s face. She knew he loved his sister deeply, but his reaction was so extreme she wondered if there was something else.

“She’s fine. Completely unhurt,” Evie said, enunciating the words clearly.

To her amazement, Scott hauled her against him and hugged her so tight she could feel his heart racing, even through his heavy coat. Of course she knew his arms would be strong. He was a firefighter. But she’d never imagined how good it would feel to be held by those strong arms.

It should not feel this good. Especially after the way they had parted several nights ago.

Scott released her suddenly and gently set her away from him. He held her at arm’s length. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

“Come see your sister,” Evie said. She grabbed his sleeve. “Caroline is right over here in the cruiser with one of our best guys.”

Before they reached the Starlight Point cruiser, Caroline saw her brother and jumped out of the car. Scott crushed her with a hug. Evie smiled, glad for at least one happy ending on this disastrous morning. She started to walk away and leave the siblings alone, but she was still close enough to hear Scott’s voice. “The report on the radio said officer down on the Point Bridge,” he said. His voice sounded like he’d just struggled up out of a deep canyon. “And I knew you were out here.”

“My partner, Mark, got hit by a car,” Caroline said.

Evie didn’t hear Scott’s immediate reply but then she heard him say, “I couldn’t lose you, too.”

Caroline answered quietly, but her words were muffled against her brother’s turnout coat. Evie walked away, fearing she had already heard too much.

“Somebody move that truck,” the Starlight Point chief yelled. The fire engine Scott had driven was blocking the exit lane and the ambulance was trying to leave. One of the firefighters from Bayside who’d arrived in a different ambulance stalked over to the truck and backed it out of the way.

Evie thought about Scott’s reckless driving and parking. For a man so devoted to safety, he’d thrown it out the window when he feared for someone he loved. Interesting. There was something Scott was afraid of more than failing to follow the rules.

“Hey, Evie.”

She turned, recognizing her brother’s voice. Jack’s suit coat flapped in the breeze as he walked up.
